Admissions Information

Degree Programs

The Department of Biomedical Engineering offers graduate programs leading to the following degrees:

  • Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Engineering (From Bachelors and from Masters options)
  • Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering (Thesis and Non-Thesis Options)

Documents received after deadline will not be accepted. Incomplete application files will not receive admission consideration for the semester applied for. This is strongly enforced by the Graduate School.

 

Admission Requirements

The graduate programs are open to all qualified individuals with a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) or Master’s of Science (M.S.) in Biomedical Engineering or related field.

Course Requirements

Upon admission, students with degrees in related fields will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and may be required to take additional leveling courses. These leveling courses do not count towards the graduate degree. Generally, every graduate student should have taken:

  •     2 years of Calculus (through differential equations)
  •     1 year of Engineering Physics (calculus based physics)
  •     1 year of Biology
  •     1 year of Chemistry

Admission Requirements

Students must meet or exceed these requirements in order for their Application to be reviewed.

  • B.S. Degree: Biomedical Engineering or related field
  • GPA: (MS) 3.00/4.00 on last 60 hours (Ph.D.) 3.30/4.00 on last 60 hours or Graduate hours if hold MS degree
  • (Optional) Recommended GRE*:(Current scale) Q-159, V-150 (Prior scale) Q-750, V-450
  • (International Applicants) TOEFL or IELTS or DuoLingo:

    TOEFL: The minimum score required is 92 for the internet-based test.
    IELTS: The minimum IELTS score required is an overall 7.0.
    DuoLingo: The minimum score is 105.

*These scores reflect those of a competitive applicant but admission into our program is based on a holistic review of your application.

 

Application Checklist

Acceptance into the program is based on a competitive combination of academic background, GRE scores, recommendation letters, resume, and the statement of purpose. The Checklists below list all requirements for the Application Submission:

Domestic Student Checklist

  • UH Graduate School Application
  • $50 Application Fee (cannot be waived)
  • Official Transcripts from all colleges and universities you have attended (Scanned copies of official transcripts can be uploaded as PDF files and may be used by programs to make admission decisions. If admitted, however, you will not be able to enroll without the official transcript(s) showing undergraduate degree conferral on file.)
  • (Optional) GRE scores (University code is 6870)
  • Statement of Purpose (Upload into Application)
  • Resume/CV (Upload into Application)
  • 3 Letters of Recommendation (Submit emails within the Application and forms will be sent to Recommenders)

International Student Checklist

  • UH Graduate School Application
  • $80 Application Fee (cannot be waived)
  • Official Transcripts from all colleges and universities you have attended (Scanned copies of official transcripts can be uploaded as PDF files and may be used by programs to make admission decisions. If admitted, however, you will not be able to enroll without the official transcript(s) showing undergraduate degree conferral on file.)
  • (Optional) GRE scores (University code is 6870)
  • Statement of Purpose (Upload into Application)
  • Resume/CV (Upload into Application)
  • 3 Letters of Recommendation (Submit emails within the Application and forms will be sent to Recommenders)
  • TOEFL or IELTS scores
  • Financial backing letter (pdf file) (Upload into Application)
  • Copy of passport (Upload into Application)

Note: When preparing your Resume/CV and Personal Statement for submission, please be sure to highlight your past research, current research interests, and UH Biomedical Engineering faculty that you are interested in working with.

Application Process

Applications will be submitted via the online Application system. Once Applications have been received Applicants will be notified of their status and missing documents (if applicable). Any status updates will occur within the Application Dashboard or via email. Applicants will be notified once decisions have been made.

 

Financial Aid and Related Information​

The Biomedical Engineering Department encourages students to reach out to Faculty in regards to funding opportunities. The Department does not match students with Faculty nor do they supply Financial Aid directly to admitted students.
