Dr. Ince Establishes New Neurosurgery Collaboration

The Department of Biomedical Engineering is pleased to announce a Dr. Nuri Ince's new collaboration with the Department of Neurosurgery of Baylor College of Medicine.  During the 2014-2015 academic year, the laboratory of Dr. Nuri Ince, Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering, will he be hosting a neurosurgery resident from Baylor, Anish Sen, MD, under the guidance of Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery Dr. Ashwin Viswanathan.   The collaboration will permit the advance study of the neurophysiology of the basal ganglia and methods to advance Deep Brain Stimulation.

Over the course of the next year, Dr. Sen will bring a new clinical perspective to the ongoing research in elucidating the neurophysiology of basal ganglia structures and how specific neural oscillations contribute to the pathology of Parkinson’s Disease.  By contributing valuable clinical data and clinical analysis, Dr. Sen, along with the research assistants of Dr. Ince, plans to make advances in our understanding of how Deep Brain Stimulation targets are chosen as well as advances in stimulation paradigms as they are related to Parkinson’s Disease.  Dr. Sen will be working at both the Baylor College of Medicine and the University of Houston over the course of the academic year, performing research both on actual human patients as well as in the laboratory.  He will also be performing his regular clinical duties at the five teaching hospitals associated with the medical school.

The Department of Neurosurgery of Baylor College of Medicine affords its neurosurgery trainees one year of clinical research during its seven year training program.  We believe this unique partnership will increase the academic productivity of both departments and look forward to seeing the fruitful discoveries yet to come.
